Dang dude, nice blade there... was it broken when you found it? how long from finding the first piece to the second or was it a gift/buy from a friend, aquaintainance (sp?) It`s a great piece either way, wish I was able to hit the fields here, but with temps in the 20`s & a good wind, I`ll sit here at the `puter & look at yours instead... lol

Perhaps someone can clarify (20 miles from my books) but doesn't Converse type Lost Lakes as "Diagonal Corner Notch" right after the Dovetail and Thebes varients?

This one has attributes of both the Dove and Thebes but it's just not "right" to be either. Lost Lake was the first flash through my brain when I found it. The crude "clipped wings" (snapped) appear to possibly be intentional, tip break and rework are old, base damage more recent.

One of my favorite types. Here's some from Ohio and Kentucky, first group Oh., center piece has a super sharp chisel tip. I think this one still got some use even after the base issue. Next two groups are from Ky. Nothing spectacular but they're authentic.

Like DH said before this post there may be some Thebes and possibly a Dove in here but I posted them because some of those inbetween early archaic types are tough to be exact.

Some really great examples in this thread.

Mike, your piece definitely seems to fit Hothem's description in "Indian Flints of Ohio", looks to be a close match to the beautiful twins/cousins illustrated (with one being on the cover of the book IIRC). Mine might very well be as well. Both seem to be far removed from the better part of notched-base varieties in his "Ohio Dovetails" book. Going from memory, my books aren't handy but most of those were more like the piece in my avatar minus a "tick" in the base. The variations in that particular book get quite complicated. Great book, don't get me wrong there, sometimes confusing (for me).

Ghost Recon's examples posted between ours is a superb example of cultural/type similarities within the timeframe. I think the pieces we posted represent the Lost Lake variety more likely than Dovetail or Thebes types but that's simply my opinion. I'm just a hunter-gatherer, very far removed from an expert on much of anything...

Wish we all had one like Relicgrubber's, that's just a Killer!

Wes,I agree. for a long time I thought my point was some type of dovetail but I lean more to the lost lake on this point,I guess it doesn't matter both from about same time period.Mike
