Garscale, Comanche showed me a trick to get the algae off...just put it in vinegar until the bubbles stop (under 15 min).
You might want to try it on a sample piece first but worked on a couple of pieces for me.
I like to see the black spots on points. Adds character, and authenticity when that is an issue. I think it is more related to the type of dirt and organic matter they are in. Some sites you never see it and others have it on every flake. Sometimes you see it referred to as fly specs. There is another type on underwater points that is some sort off egg casing. I'm like Indy, a tooth brush and water is about as far as I go except maybe a dilute bleach on the green lake algae.
Thanks for the extra pics, Garscale!
Man, what a great piece that is... I'm going out on a limb here, but I think it's a Scottsbluff point preform that was being used as a knife. The cross section looks great with that gentle median ridge. The base-to-tip taper looks right, too, with the thickest section right at or slightly past the shoulders. A little more selective smoothing of high ridges and it would be about ready for the heavy pressure flaking. Just a knapper's opinion...![]()

man,it must be hard to stop digging, very cool finds
Great work Garscale, and beautiful finds...
I like the way the spots add a unique character to those particular points, but I certainly wouldn't blame you for wanting to clean 'em up.

Hmmm. I cleaned a bunch of the black stuff off before taking pics. Might start leaving more on them. Odd that only the points taht come from the spring area have it.

That is pretty incredible. I love that big blade; it's fantastic (of course the rest of the stuff is great as well, but WOW, that one really pops.) Congratulations on a fascinating site. Tom
