That is something I've pondered for years particularly with early notched points and the trouble it took to grind them relative to a lanceolate. It seems that a perceived notion of grinding being necessary to not diminish the integrity of the binding material, as you mentioned, would be the most parsimonious theory. And, again as you mentioned, why did it take 1000's of years to decide it was a waste of time.
