Grinding at a right angle to the edge, I would imagine, would put more lateral pressure on the material which would in turn flake even more material off......leaving them with a new sharp edge that was undesireable. This would be especially true when first starting the grinding process and there were more high spots that would grab and hold the stone doing the grinding. Grinding along the axis would reduce this possibility.
Forgive me for sticking my inexperienced nose amongst the heavy hitters here but mechanically this makes sence to me.

I had a broken Agate Basin with a basal edge like that until recently -- ground so heavily the edge had moved up into the point and was at an angle to it.

Maybe they ground ochre with it or something. (?)

You gave me the point you're describing I believe, unless there was another. It's an interesting piece. I'll take some pics and post them in here.

Just dropped in to say I really enjoyed this article. well written and well researched, great job Mojave.

I'm assuming it's a Mo. piece made of Burlington. Mr. Uniface has more info on it than me. I've seen some rectangular knives and side knives that are really similar in appearance to this piece as well, but since it's way out of my comfort zone I'm only speculating.

Hi Ghost

The one I mentioned is Neanderthal's now. He gifted me some artifact castings he'd made and I wanted to return the favor -- since we'd been discussing points recycled as tools, it seemed appropriate.

I'd forgotten about yours. Don't recall where it came from, but it would be easy to place within a couple hundred miles, I'd expect.
