In Which the Water Turkey goes water skiing . . . .

Raymond and I headed down to Limestone County for our annual Labor Day hunt this year with high hopes and a defective fuel pump. But, the Water Turkey was running fine as long as someone just kept sqeezing that old bulb to keep the gas flowing. We hit our first site, where several killers have been found this year, to no avail, and went on down the way to our favorite site, the spot that always produces for us. Sure enough, we'd been there 10 minutes when I found what would have been my all time best Perdiz point . . .

Shame about the base and barb, it would have been over 2" long whole! Then I found this year's candidate for the "Ugliest Point" competition . . . .

Looks OK from this angle . . . .

But look at the side view!!

We were there for a good while, and everybody had scored. We were working the soft mud at the south end of the island when suddenly the wind picked up drastically . . . from a steady 10 - 15 mph to a solid 25-30 mph! I was looking up at the island's north end, where I had tied the boat to a tree, when suddenly I realized the boat was WWAAAAAYYYY further off than it should be . . . I waded back to where we had tied up, and saw that the rope was still firmly tied to the tree . . . and the other end still had a good knot in it . . . but the boat was nearly a mile away already and getting further by the minute! There was NO WAY I was going to catch it, not over that distance with that kind of choppiness, so I simply found a flat topped stump and stood on top of it, waving our sifters over my head to attract attention.
After awhile, in the distance, I saw a barge stop next to our boat and take it in tow. Then a very fast boat came shooting down the lake and met up with the barge, and both started coming our way. Some of the ladies on the barge spotted the moron standing on the stump doing semaphore, and the faster boat sped over our way. It was the two local game wardens, and they took us to our boat, checked to make sure we were registered, and told us to be careful riding back to the boat ramp in the four foot swells. We headed back to the ramp with a huge sigh of relief.
Despite being interrupted right as we hit the best part of the site, we still had a decent day. Here are the day's finds:

the Whole Haul

Ray's points - three nice Dawsons and a killer broke!

Ray also got this big petrified wood knife!

Jerry got a whittled down Dawson and a nice Clear Fork gouge!

My stuff - killer broke Perdiz, the big pooter, a twisted blade, two nice Dawsons (love the red one) and a little Neches River, and an arrow point preform.

Last pic . . .

Close up of my better ones.

All in all, it could have been a lot worse. Next time, I am CHAINING the Water Turkey to the biggest tree I can find!

Lewis,

That's a great day's hunt. Love the Dawson's, especially the red one and the second point you pictured that's not completely thinned. Great stuff.

Nice finds Lewis. That red Dawson is sweet. I love the long bases on those. Glad to hear you guys didn't get stranded and got the Water Turkey back.
