I am taking the wife and kid to our first ever dig at Digfest in October. What would be the best tools to take?

All I use is a small shovel. It's around 2 1/2 ft. long. You should be able to find one at any hardware store.
I like to use 3 things
1.A small pick ax with the handle cut down to just over 16''/an old double head one is what i have .
2.A little hoe with the handle cut down/Don't need a lot of stick your on your knees most time,,
3.A old Srew driver/Wiggle pick to use around rocks and artifacts/
Keep in mind your not going to be digging hog wild///atleast you should'nt///jmo///c

Not sure I know what Digfest is, but when I surface hunt (which is always) I always take a small pry bar with me. It is about 1/2" wide and 5 1/2" long. Handy when metal detecting too.
If the ground growth is thick or your way obscured by twigs and brambles something like this is useful. Handles are easy to come by.
We carry the following with us
1. Wiggle pick or you can use a pick and cut handle
2. large old screw driver
3. hand gardening shovel
4. med shovel
5. 5gal bucket has lots of uses like carring everything in , sitting on, moving dirt to sifter
6. small sifter mine is about 20"x16"
8. some type of shade and lots of water.
A hero is no braver than an ordinary man, but he is brave five minutes longer.
