    Space Rox!!

Been going through my collection of space rocks lately. Here are a few meteorites of various types.

Here's a stony-iron Pallasite, Imilac, from Chile, consisting of olivine inclusions in a nickel-iron matrix.

And an individual from the same fall, with a "window" polished to show olivine and nickel-iron. Imilac was found in the Atacama Desert of Chile....

Another slice of the Imilac meteorite:

Marjalahti, fell in India in 1902:

Incoming space rocks enter the atmosphere at quite the clip, and they briefly burn and melt before slowing down, extinguishing, and then dropping to the ground. Here are two meteorites showing how the material melted and flowed during the molten phase of atmospheric entry.

Here's a meteorite called Millbillillie, which was seen to fall in the Australian outback in 1960. You can easily see how this rock melted and flowed as rivulets of molten material. These are called flow lines.....

Sikhote-Alin. An iron meteorite that fell in far eastern Russia in 1947. Perhaps the Queen of irons. Lots of obvious flow lines on this individual from that famous fall......

As a meteorite collector, it's even possible to own pieces of Mars and pieces of the moon, both of which have had impacts that knocked pieces into space to eventually fall to earth as meteorites.

DAG 476, Dar al Gani 476, found in Libya. A piece of the planet Mars. Proof came from matching gases found in Martian meteorites with the known composition of the atmosphere of Mars:

Two pieces of the moon. Northwest Africa 482. NWA 482. These are samples of the dark side of the moon....

And another lunar meteorite from Oman:

I am looking for a piece of the Ysleta Texas Iron, before 1914 which was found about a mile from the house I grew up in a few years before I was born. Also a piece of the Columbus New Mexico which was found on the ranch I worked at. If any of you space rock collectors have a piece let me know.

Nice collection, especially the Imilac and planetaries. I have a slab of Admire, a Gebel Kamil and a Whitecourt specimen. Most of my collection is tektites and other impact glasses.
I love hunting for tektites as much as points. Hope Shannon wont kick me out for saying that!

    Happy hunting,
    Briman
