Advocate for Collecting on Lakes
Here's a view you don't see express in the press often.
" If you would like to encourage people to discover artifacts, all we have to do is draw down Lake Bomoseen about 7 feet in the spring and take a shallow plow and rough up the beaches on the lake and let the people search for artifacts. What an education kids and everybody else would get." Full story here; Finding Indian artifacts: Rutland Herald Online Shannon

How cool is that!! I'm still trying to set up a meeting with Senator Deuell to go over our legislative strategy for the next session here in Texas.

Quote:
"Agency Reports Texas Historical Commission Jim Bruseth reported on the THC’s interest in following the progress of SB 1828 which would allow the collection of artifacts from public waterways. Under this bill THC would issue permits to private individuals who in turn would have to report to the THC and the THC would have the right to purchase artifacts from the individuals. Jim requested that the CTA send representatives to testify against this bill." http://www.c-tx-arch.org/newsletters...Newsletter.pdf Shannon

You go Indy. I am still working in New Mexico to try to convince my archaeology professors to train avocational archaeologists in site/relic in-situ documentation and allowing them to collect and send data to a central location that would open a whole new level of data collection like we have never seen. I am thinking of doing a research paper on it with documentation up the wazoo. Maybe I can pry a few minds open here and both sides can benefit. I am proposing something similar to your bill, but it would not limit people to waterways and streams. Good luck Indy!!! Teresa

This is a very exciting time in Texas politics for this kind of a resolution to have a chance. With Elections in November I would encourage some letter writting to local Representatives and Senators who are up for re-election (enclose a small check for their campaign and you will be amazed by the response). By the way typically an individually composed, hand written letter has the most impact. You might be amazed how interested your local representatives will be of your concerns getting closer to election time. Although I prefer phone calls and talk one on one. This just insures that they care about your vote, but also to insure that your oppinion is being heard. We my not be able to afford a team of powerful lobbyists but we can at least make sure that the representatives of our local districts know who we are and what we would like to see out of this next session.

Anyone else but me find it amusing that the group against this is called the THC, which is the hullucinegen in pot. Maybe they set around all day getting wasted trying to think of ways to stop us from collecting artifacts. lol

Steve ,Steve,Steve,,,thats some funny Sh*T,,,you have no idea about Texas politics,,,Hell we got a Governor that can Shoot A cyote While in full stride at about 50 yrds. with a laser sighted 45.While taking his morning jog inside the City limits of The City Of Austin,,,,all before breakfast. You don't wan't to mess with these People..
This is the fight we are up against.Lets say the bill passes both houses by majority vote the Governor can still Veto it and it has to go back to the House and Senate,,,and pass by 2/3rds. Oh,,,and by the way "The Texas Historical Commision" is hand picked and appointed by you know who,,,Thats right the guy that can shoot a cyote in the city limits with a laser sighted 45,,,lol It is very hard to change laws in TEXAS///comanche

Actually, I think Gov. Perry will sign this thing . . . what we are going for is a blanket legalization of surface hunting in public waterways, which is what his office suggested last time around when I was proposing a license for artifact hunting. From what I hear, Gov. Perry (whom I really like, BTW) has been known to pick up a point or two in his time.
