UHMW plastic rod though I think delrin may work too. I use the UHMW for the iderect tool and have a small striker made from it too. Works ok but need a bigger one for heavy work. That's why I use the big deer billet.

Aluminum hu? Interesting. Not much mass there but maybe has good energy transfer? Must need to keep the velocity up? What kind of aluminum?

If you don't have any Band-Aids, you are either good or you are not knapping enough.

Dart, the aluminum I use is 6061 alloy. I think it's the most common type and you can get it at hardware stores. The larger diameters (2" or more) can be ordered easily online (and is much cheaper than copper). Aluminum has about the same specific gravity as flint or quartzite. That means that it weighs about the same as most hard hammerstones with the same volume.
