What the %%$##@#$#@@!!!! Is wrong with people?
Indian Arrowheads - a nice Alberta w/Rogers COA! - eBay (item 160469157711 end time Aug-22-10 19:25:37 PDT)
62 VIEWS, 10 WATCHERS, ONE stinking bid???????????????? I foolishly traded my very best personally found Dalton for this killer Alberta two years ago. It has incredible flaking, and even Rogers was impressed with its workmanship and colorful material. I have listed it on EBay four times now - twice with a COA, twice without. Never more than one bid, never more than $75. I can sell junk all day long, it seems - OK, excuse me, field grade Archaic and Woodland artifacts. But the minute I list a high end piece and actually put a reserve on it, interest dies. What do they want me to do, give it away? Sorry. I just get sick of seeing double digit watchers and then watching an item expire without a single bid over my opener. I will NEVER put this piece on EBay again. Someone wants it, they can buy it through this forum or at a show. Otherwise, it's going back in my Paleo frame. What a fool I was to trade for it. I miss my %%$$#@#!!! Dalton!!!!!! |

Sorry Lewis,,,I hear my dad say the same thing,,,it is almost as if the market is encouraging corruption,,,like Photom bidders,,,Fakes or out and out "Rocks",,,,,,, that really gets my old man going he's like "What the JUNK" "I dont understand these folks"
Atleast you put a reserve on it> hang onto it,, the right buyer will come along,,That can appreciate it

I've kept waiting for hard times to catch up with artifacts and might assume that to be the case here.
But at the same time, I've been watching paleo, maybe paleo and outright not paleo tools described as paleo go for just crazy figures. Like ten times what they would have brought six months ago. I'm on the sidelines scratching my head. The grand prize ? Put a bid on a uniface tool from Ohio yesterday. After I clicked the "confirm" icon, a box came up saying the seller only accepts bids from people who have paypal accounts. I figure it's his loss. Like I needed another uniface anyhow (!) |

Winter time is a better time to sell on eBay, when folks are stuck in the house. It can be a buyer's market right now, though!

If there's any way you can, hold on to it until Temple rolls back around.Surely somebody there will be willing to give what you want for it.

A good two-thirds of it is that collectors want local stuff. Most people after Pennsylvania relics are in Pennsylvania, and get a lot more excited over pieces from within a county or so of where they live/hunt than they do over more distant pieces even within the state (grade ten material and beauty pieces excepted). Even Ohio's a tough sell in Penna, unless it's right across the border. Kentucky ? Forget it.
I looked at your point, Indy, and admired it. But what the flip relevance does it have to somebody from way beyond the area it came from ? Take it to where Them Good 'Ol Boys where it came from are. My dos centavos. |

I've collected Indian relics and Civil War relics for most of my life. In times of recession the market is flooded with lower and mid level items. The primo relics tend to hold their value or slide very little. I think this is because they are held by folks who are less economically effected by the market. That said, this time around with the "great recession" there are some incredible high end deals in the CW market. Some rare buttons that sold 5-7 years ago for $5K are all the way down to $2-3K. I see some paleo points that seem pretty reasonable assuming they are correct.
I agree with Uni about the regionality (is that a word?) of things. I buy little and only if it has good provenance for my area.

Good points without reserves will go for market value. There are too many people watching the Ebay points for it not to happen. Look at the non-reserve sales and tell me it isn't true. Most folks use the Ebay filter for non-reserve points only. By putting a reserve on it, you are loosing most of your possible purchasers from the getgo.

I think that with a piece like that you are going to have a hard time getting the worth out of it on ebay. A high end piece that doesn't have high end popularity.... Doves, LLakes, even Daltons seem to bring people out but a really good Alberta like that is going to have a smaller crowd. Hell, most will look at that and think "why is he wanting so much for that stubby adena?"
I think your best bet is to save that for a show or hold out for the right buyer.
