Need Some Opinions Please.....

i got this in the mail the other day,bought it from a man that said it was from missouri and was from a collectors collection that was sold in an estate auction,me being a Dalton finatic,i bought it and it looks authentic to me but im no expert at picking out fakes,i need some opinions on this one,i want to send it off for authenticating,but i want to get opinions before i waist anymore of my money if i havent already have? i know its hard to authenticate from pics,but give it yalls best guess? its fluted on one side ,ground base. Thanks!

that patina with the dirt rubbed in it scares the crap outa me. Caveat emptor

Looks fishy to me as well. The dirt being the main reason. There is usually a reason it is not washed off.

Joe,
That is a classic example of the faker technique of grinding the faces of a piece to make it look "weathered". The last picture looking from the base up shows it very well. I have also heard people calling it "high spot grinding". Basically, if you see the highest "peaks" on the faces of the piece ground smooth, you are looking at a piece that someone sandpapered, wheel ground, or tumbled. There are exceptions where authentic points show grinding on the faces, but it is much more uniform, and not confined to just the high ridges. Creek finds and well used drills come to mind are exceptions.
