Feline effigies

I agree that many effigies were made from rocks that resembled a certain animal or a certain characteristic of that animal, and were then modified, to varying degrees, to resemble it more. Here are two authentic feline effigies made from agatized coral.I believe the natural "spots" made by the coral polyps reminded the artist of spots on felines he had seen. One is the silhouette of a cat's head, the other an outline of the entire cat. Now you can just make them out, but when the larger one was found it had been under water for who knows how long, and the coral was much more transluscent, and the spots could be seen all along the cat's back.Look closely, and you can make out the fine pressure flaking around the edge of the larger piece.Likewise, with the turkey effigy, i think the botryoidal formation of the coral reminded the maker of a turkey's wattle, so he roughed out a turkey's head out of the stone, possibly for a walking/talking stick head.

Ahh, ridicule, the resort of the ignorant.I guess just because you've never seen it, it doesn't exist, or, maybe you think you've seen it all? I'm betting not.

I agree with Ray. A very vivid imagination there rokdoc. I could walk out into my rock garden and pick up numerous rocks and turn them around and around until I find that they look like something, but that doesn't make them an Effigy or an artifact.
