Memoirs of An Archaeologist

A Golden Journey:: Memoirs of an Archaeologist

Luther S. Cressman

Just found a hardback and hand signed copy of this book online for 3$ !!!

Without a doubt this is the most amazing and candid book on Archaeology I've ever picked up. L.S Cressman is one of the true fathers of Great Basin investigations on Early Man and founded the Dept. of Anthropology and Archeology at U Of Oregon in the early 1930's. This book chronicles his very early forays into the nearly untouched Northern Great Basin in the 1930's ..most of it done literally on a shoestring and a prayer. He draws on his extensive field notes and interjects his personal commentary with the benefit of hindsight. His finds and excavations of essentially untouched caves ( Catlow, Paisley, Ft. Rock to name a few) both challenged and forever changes the long held beliefs regarding Early Man's historical context in this region

Cressman has always been one of my idols and this account confirms why one of the pioneers of Oregon Archaeology was also a man of amazing personal integrity

If any of you like reading stories try Ishi in Two Worlds, Kroeber, or The Education of Little Tree, Forrest Carter.

Has anyone read or heard of this book? "Gathering Traces of the Great Basin Indians" by Dennis Cassinelli? Supposed to be pretty good, but it is out of print and very expensive.

I have an original one in excellent condition. It has a big pullout timeline with point drawings. How expensive? I could easily part with it.

There one listed on Amazon for $433.33. I would not pay that, and would be shocked if it sells for that! The seller realizes it's out of print, and there are no others listed. I'll wait, might find one at a book sale or the thrift store.
